A reading lesson · six steps

How to read your Human Design chart.

A bodygraph looks like circuitry because it is. Nine centers, sixty-four gates, thirty-six channels, two colors. Here is the order to read it in, so it stops being a diagram and starts being a mirror.

New to the system entirely? Start with what Human Design is first.

§ II · Cast your chart

Three lines of birth data.
First, you need a chart.

Reading lessons work better with your own bodygraph open. Eva calculates it free from your birth date, time, and city, and then walks you through it in plain language, starting with the two or three things in your chart that explain the most.

§ III · The reading order

Six passes over one diagram.

The mistake everyone makes is trying to read the whole chart at once. A bodygraph is read in layers, and the layers have an order: each one only makes sense on top of the one before it.

IStart with your Type

The first thing any chart tells you is which of the five types you are: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector. Type describes what your energy is built to do and how you are meant to enter things. Everything else in the chart is detail on top of this. If you learn one thing from your bodygraph, learn your type and its strategy.

COMPARE THE FIVE TYPES

IIFind your Authority

Authority is where in your body the correct answer lives before the mind gets involved. Sacral authority answers in the gut, in the moment. Emotional authority needs to ride the wave and decide after clarity arrives. Splenic speaks once, quietly, in the instant. Your authority is listed on every chart, and it is the single most practical thing in the whole system: it tells you how to decide.

COMPARE THE SEVEN AUTHORITIES

IIINote your Profile

Profile is written as two numbers, like 3/5 or 1/4, and reads like the costume your design wears in the world. The first number is how you consciously move through life; the second runs underneath. Together they say whether you learn by study or by trial, whether you are meant to be seen or to work behind the scenes.

IVRead the nine centers

The bodygraph has nine geometric centers. Colored-in centers are defined: consistent energy you generate yourself. White centers are open: places where you take in and amplify everyone around you. Neither is better. Defined centers are what you can rely on; open centers are where you are wise about others and vulnerable to conditioning. Most people recognize their life story fastest in their open centers.

VUnderstand gates and channels

The numbers inside the centers are the 64 gates, one for each hexagram of the I Ching, and each is a specific frequency of energy. When a gate on one center connects to its partner gate on another, the pair forms a channel, and a channel is what defines the two centers it joins. Your defined channels are the fixed wiring of your life: the traits people have described in you since childhood, whether you cultivated them or not.

VISee the two columns

Every chart is calculated twice. The black column is your conscious personality, the sky at the moment of birth: the parts of you that you recognize as you. The red column is your design, the sky roughly 88 days before birth: the body’s inheritance, visible to everyone but you. Where black and red overlap, you are consistent. Where they differ, people see things in you that you cannot.

§ IV · Eva

Or let the chart read itself to you.

Everything above is what Eva does automatically. She holds your full bodygraph, every gate, every channel, both columns, and instead of handing you a glossary, she uses it as the lens for whatever you actually ask: the job decision, the recurring argument, the tiredness that will not resolve. You never have to learn the notation unless you want to.

And because she remembers your conversations, the reading gets sharper with use. The chart is the map she starts from. Your life is what she reads it against.

§ V · Questions

Asked, in the quiet.

What are Human Design gates?

+

The 64 gates are specific frequencies of energy, one per hexagram of the I Ching, positioned around the nine centers. A gate is activated when a planet occupied its position at your birth or 88 days before. When two facing gates are both active, they form a channel and define the centers they connect. Each gate also corresponds to one of the 64 Gene Keys.

What do the red and black columns mean?

+

Black is the sky at your birth: your conscious personality. Red is the sky roughly 88 days earlier: your unconscious design, the inherited traits others see in you but you cannot see directly. A complete reading weighs both.

What should I look at first?

+

Type, then authority. Together they answer the two most practical questions the system addresses: what is my energy for, and how should I decide. Everything else is resolution on top.

Do I need my exact birth time?

+

Exact time gives the truest chart. If you only know the day, a chart can still be calculated and the major elements are often stable. Enter what you know and start there.

§ VI · The door

The lesson is easier with your own chart open.

Ninety seconds of birth data, and every example on this page becomes specific: your type, your authority, your gates. Then the reading actually begins.
